Plan a successful office fit-out
Organize your home office space
More and more people are discovering a need to have a small office in
their home, garage or workshop. Whether you're running a small business or
taking work home from the office, it's amazing how work-related tools and paper
accumulate - often to the point that it's difficult to work or even find what we
wanted to work on. Not every one has a big budget for outfitting a home office and few people can pay to have a professional space planner come to their home to design an efficient home office space.
There are lots of ways to create a good space for working at home with out spending a fortune. The most important feature of a good office design is functionality. But to often our offices are crammed with so many office machines, equipment, supplies and pieces of paper that our small or home office are completely dysfunctional.
Define your space. If you're lucky enough have a spare room for your home office, or the children have grown up and left home, the task won't be so hard. The key to a good home office is to make use of whatever room you have, whether it's a landing, a small closet a unused corner, a shed, find any space that can be dedicated to a home office area. Once you have found your space spend some time and actually measuring your space, its no good buying a desk that dose not fit.
What ever work needs doing try to do it yourself, you will save money! consider painting the walls yourself in a calming color to set the tone for your work space.
You've chosen the best location for your home office space, you have measured your space to see if your furniture will fit, now you must check power, lighting and ventilation needs.
Lighting Is the lighting inadequate for you're work space needs, when choosing the lighting for your home office, assess your needs first by sitting in your proposed work space and determining how much illumination you need to work efficiently and where the light should be placed. An office with inadequate lighting in not only useless but can lead to all kinds of health problems from headaches through neck and shoulder pain. Chances are extremely high that the existing lighting in the proposed location of your home office is inadequate for your work space needs. Few residences have rows of fluorescent lights installed, for example,as commercial office spaces do. While you don't have to go that far,you do need to incorporate strong overhead lighting in your home office design - and in many cases, that means purchasing and installing new or additional light fixtures.Various types are now available and relatively easy to install.
Power Now think of the office equipment you're about to install in your home office Is there enough power points for your equipment, suppose you have a PC a monitor,a laser printer, a fax machine,a scanner, you may be able to cut down on your power needs by combining some of your office equipment. For example, instead of having a separate printer, fax, copier and scanner, you could have a multifunction machine that preformed all these functions. Do you have sufficient phone socket available for your PC and phone?
Ventilation Many people overlook the importance of ventilation in there home office design, but you and your office equipment need it. First the more equipment you have operating , the more heat will be generated - and excessive heat can damage office equipment such as PCs secondly, if your home office space isn't adequately ventilated, working there can be extremely uncomfortable for you ."Sick building syndrome" is one environmental factor with its accompanying headaches, congestion, fatigue and even a rash, can result from poor air quality in a building or office. Now that you've examined the basic infrastructure of your home office design, its time to give some thought to the utility and safety aspects of your work space.
Utility and safety You've chosen the best location for your home office based on your power, lighting and ventilation needs. Now you're ready to set up your home office and see how well your office design meets your work needs. Use this check list to ensure that your home office is a safe, usable work space.
Place your office equipment for maximum ease of use. Determine the best place for each piece of office equipment and furniture by running through a work test, what ever you use frequently should be close to hand and easy to access. If its not move it. For instance,if your work involves using the phone a lot, your phone should be in a position where you don't have to get up or reach awkwardly to use it.If your work involves handling and filing a lot of paper, your filing cabinet needs to be close enough that you can get to it with a few steps-or even better, have filing drawers within your desk, there are many available on the market.
Protect your sensitive office equipment. I've already stressed the need for adequate ventilation as part of your office design. It's equally important to protect your office equipment such as PC, from power surges to prevent damage to your equipment.
Organize those cords and wires. Just because you have a lot of office equipment doesn't mean your work space has to look like a rattlesnake den. Examine the cords of your office equipment and take up slack where possible, either using wire ties to tie up the excess, or using something like a Cable Turtle Neatly bundled cords help prevent accidents and will make your home office safe and aesthetically pleasing.
Clear the paths Because they're situated in rooms that were originally designed for other uses, some home office resemble obstacle courses. You need to get up from your desk and walk around with out banging your shins. Get rid of all unnecessary furniture and clutter in your home office space. And don't forget to check the floor.Make sure all area rugs are securely tacked down. You must adhere to the same ergonomic, health and safety standards of the work environment.
Add some candy. A well-placed painting or print or even a corkboard with some photos can add some visual punch to your home office design and make your office a more appealing space to work in. Your personal taste will determine what works best for you,but don't clutter up your work space with to many visual distractions. Infrastructure,Utility and safety-the keys to office design that will help you create a home office that's both functional work space and a pleasant, productive place to work. Even if we sometimes have little choice as to where our office space will be,focusing on these three elements will help us design an office space that's usable and ultimately livable
