The Police alone can not provide all the solutions to property crime business-Householders and communities must learn to help themselves and regain control over their property's.
Most crime is opportunity
Every business should have adequate security and safety procedures in place to protect their property.
Staff should meet and greet all customers,visitors and people making deliveries,they should report anyone acting suspiciously,don't forget employers have a legal responsibility for the health and safety of employees if you introduce measures to improve their security you will also improve the security of your own business.
Make sure all staff are aware of your emergency and security procedures,
Identify at risk areas and put them right
Make a list walk round your building and imagine you are a criminal and look for the opportunities for crime,
these can include.
Roofs (flat) can be a higher risk because they can provide a platform for a criminal to use as a way into the building,
is there anything they can use close by to climb a wall or fence,may be a bin a ladder etc:
Vegetation that needs cutting back to improve visibility,
Windows that are broken, no lighting,faulty locks,tools left out that can be use to smash windows or brake a lock, these are the sort of things you should be looking for.
There are many things you can do.

Doors should be fitted with a five-lever mortise lock tested to British Standard BS 3621.Doors or windows that are particularly vulnerable (ground or back) should have good lighting and CCTV pointed at them.
A good Alarm must always be fitted to EU standard EN50131 check with insurers for the appropriate grade,
Alarms should be monitored by an alarm receiving center where calls can be passed to a security company or the police but the police will only respond to alarms fitted and monitored by companies accredited by the national security inspectorate (NSI) or the security system and alarms inspection board (SSAIB) make sure you choose a accredited installer.

If your business handles a lot of cash make sure it is banked every day at different times and not left on the
premises over night,make sure you count cash out of sight and in a secure room, don't pay wages in cash as this involves large sums of money on you premises, a target for criminals.
If you take payment by credit card make sure all the information is secure or better still shredded.
Make sure you regularly back up your important information from your computers and store it of site,change your password regularly to gain access to your computer BS 7799 covers good practice in keeping information secure it also helps with requirement of the data protection act 1998.
You should always be aware of the safety of your staff and business and make sure your building is properly maintained, all security systems and smoke alarms are regularly serviced that regularly review and update your systems is adhered to
