"Ergonomics" explainedThe word "Ergonomics"comes from the Greek word "ergon" meaning work and "nomos" meaning Laws. Today however ergonomics is matching the job to the work and products to the user, ergonomics focuses on how work affects workers.
Every year approximately 35% of the work force in the UK suffer from back pain with a further 17% complaining of aches in their arms and legs, many are caused by poor working practices.
The goal of ergonomics in the work place is to prevent Injuries and illnesses, reducing or eliminating workers exposure to occupational hazards such as work- related injury's to the Mucsuloskeletal system of the worker which include tennis elbow (inflammation of the tendon in the elbow),Repetitive motion caused by typing, Cumlative Trauma Disorders (CTDS)or Repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) are caused by repetitive motions that would not cause stress or harm if preformed only once Carpal tunnel syndrome ( a condition affecting the hand and wrist),Tendonitis,Tenosynouitis de quarvain's syndrome,Thoracic outlet syndrome,and many back injuries.and several other conditions my result from repetitive motions.
Environmental factors also play a part it could include such things as indoor air quality, such thing as "sick building syndrome"with its accompanying Headaches,Congestion,Fatigue and even rashes all results from poor air quality in a office.
Improper lighting can cause eyestrain and headaches. It is important to listen to your body, if your arms wrists or hand ache after a long day typing examine your work area to see if this may be causing the problem raise or lower your chair,sometimes small changes can make all the difference at the end of the day.
